Broken Balance
Elinor Rotem has been painting since her early childhood in the city of Haifa. In her parents' home she was surrounded by a vast library of art books. Of all the artistic styles to which she was exposed, she was most enchanted by printmaking, specifically books of etchings/engravings in black and white.
During her high school years she studied painting and art history with the mythological teacher, Dov Medzini, and subsequently, at the University of Haifa, specialized in etching. Throughout the years since she has worked consistently in various print workshops in diverse techniques and on different surfaces: from zinc plates, prevalent in the 1970s and 1980s, to copper plates. Since 2010, she has been working on metal, copper, and polymer plates, creating etchings based on archival photographs documenting early settlement in pre-state Israel.
The exhibition at Office in Tel Aviv Gallery, "Broken Balance," will span etchings conveying the artist's discontent vis-?-vis the social and political rift in Israel and the world over. In her works "she tries to interrupt the order, harmony, and balance," as she attests, voicing her acute criticism of our life here, when every given moment a different status quo we have become accustomed to is violated, and we are exposed, against our will, to an intolerable situation, striving to regain the former balance.
